This title will be released August 2026
At a time when the number of Irish and UK single-person households is surging, Frances McVeigh, in Living Alone and Living Well, demystifies what it means to thrive in a home for one.
This friendly, honest guide offers essential insights and practical support to help your independent home become a healthier, happier place.
Grounded in extensive research and supported throughout by the testimonies of fellow Irish and UK females who are thriving in their homes for one, Frances McVeigh disrupts our traditional and sometimes negative view of what it means to live alone and explores why and how millions of people successfully embrace a solo life today.
Written with clarity and sensitivity, this book charts the author’s experience of personal growth and self-discovery, providing lessons learned, hints, tips, and a positive transformation drawn from deep personal and practical experience.
This book is a strong offering of support whether your living arrangement is temporary or long-term, has been the result of a positive personal choice or an unexpected change in circumstances - such as a separation, loss, living child free, divorce or having simply always preferred a space of your own.

Professional
Career
Originally from Belfast in the north of Ireland, author Frances McVeigh spent her early life growing up in a traditional household before leaving home for university and onwards to live, work and study for a further five years as a software engineer in California's Silicon Valley.
Shortly after returning to Belfast in 2001, Frances continued her international career as a managing consultant for a global professional services firm working everywhere from London to New York, Africa to Brussels. All the while living and learning in her home for one.
An alumna of the University of Ulster and Queen's University Belfast, Frances stepped back from corporate life in 2023 to pursue her love of writing and support for the arts in her beloved Belfast.

Community Builder
Writer
Frances is the local volunteer coordinator and founder of the Northern Ireland Society of Authors ‘Coffee Catch Ups’. These are friendly, informal monthly chats for members to get together, discuss their projects and support one another.
Members often work in isolation and as a result these regular in-person meet ups are fast becoming an essential connection point for this creative artistic community.
Frances started the coffee groups in 2024 and has since built an active vibrant community of peer support.
Frances' debut work 'Living ALone and Living Well' is published in gratitude of the support received from this remarkable community.
Human Authored
Registered
Human Authored is a labelling scheme for books that champions transparency and authenticity. It safeguards the reader experience and celebrates the enduring value of human storytelling in a digital world.
The UK Society of Authors, in partnership with the US Authors Guild, launched the scheme in 2026.
'Living Alone and Living Well' has been registered with this scheme and reflects a body of work that has been created as the result of human skill, labour and judgement.
And, as Frances adds - a great deal of human emotion.

Outdoor Enthusiast
Hill walker
Frances is an avid outdoor enthusiast and can be found regularly hiking the magnificent Mourne Mountains with her local hill walking club, as a volunteer leader. Frances did love to ski but graduating past the green and blue slopes has remained illusive, after 20 years of trying! However, always keen to try something new and with over 120 open water dives under her belt, Frances did discover a love for water (that wasn't frozen) and has previously qualified as a PADI Rescue Diver.
Today though, it is her love of writing and hill walking that consumes her down time.
The origin story...
...from 2018 to today
What started as a small personal health check in 2018 and a loose plan to safeguard the years ahead I took up position in the corner of a local coffee shop. Then, with notebook in hand I intentionally set out to rate and review every aspect of my life at that point. What emerged from that simple snapshot was an exploration of my social, health and financial life followed closely by my future aspirations.
One of those aspirations was to write a book but not the one you are exploring today. The original plan was to write a fictional work of modern Irish folklore set against the spectacular back drop of the Mourne Mountains but what manifested was something completely different, the non-fiction book 'Living Alone And Living Well'. Despite best efforts to capture the mystical creatures lurking in the Kingdom of Mourne my pen kept returing to the under explored experiences of living alone.
Since those early days I have wrestled with this important topic alongside the book production process. I had to ditch what I thought I knew from years of corporate writing and learn how to connect with an entirely new audience who deserved compassion, respect and inclusion.
Along the way there have been agents, editors, cuts, anecdotes, dysfunction and disorder, all in the tireless pursuit of quality. I have read endless research papers and books in search of relevant meaningful data (of which there was very little) and embraced a two year digital detox before emerging, blinking into the light, with a completed manuscript. This is where you find me today, neck high in the production, marketing and promotion of 'Living Alone And Living Well'.
This book has had quite a journey to get here, as have I, and you dear reader have been at the heart of it all.
